Our name is Floral Designers of Sun Cities. Do not let the title intimidate you.

Everyone is welcome, young or old, experienced or not. We meet once a month on the fourth Monday at 1 p.m., October through May, in different homes. We share horticulture and designs and always look for ways to conserve energy and water. It is a wonderful way to meet with others and share ideas.

We had 16 designs at the Bell Library for December.

In January, three of our garden club members participated in the Ikebana Flower Show at the West Valley Art Museum, and one did a series of demonstrations.

Today, Saturday and Sunday, three other members will have designs at the Phoenix Art Museum Exhibit of Arts and Flowers. The floral designs are to reflect the painting that they are placed next to. Be sure to attend this wonderful event.

Every fall at a local school we give each third-grader a dictionary. Both students and teachers are thrilled. Floral Designers of Sun Cities was introduced to the Student Dictionary Project by the late Kareth Duval, who participated in this project in Washington State. It was a project worth while, and one we could do.

Organizations like Lions Clubs International do it for larger school complexes. We chose Morristown. It is farther out Grand Avenue and receives less help, but has a growing population each year.

The Student Dictionary becomes the property of the student - they put their name in it and use it throughout their schooling. It is theirs to keep. The dictionary is filled with information beyond word definitions, and will be invaluable when researching throughout their grades. This dictionary differs from other paperbacks. It comes from the Dictionary Project, Inc., and has expanded information: Flags of the United States, the Declaration of Independence, the U.S. Constitution and all 27 articles, U.S. presidents, information on all states, the continents and maps of the world, facts about countries, planets, sign language with the hand positions and Braille.

Kareth died this past year, and we will continue this project in her memory.
