Third-grader Jada found out the meaning of dewlap last week.
The Rotary Club of Greater Rochester is donating 1,320 dictionaries -- one for every third grader in Rochester public schools and Schaeffer Academy.
Jada received her hardcover, color dictionary on Dec. 10, along with her class at Riverside Central Elementary. The initiative is funded by a grant from the Carl and Verna Schmidt Foundation.
The Rotary took on the project to enhance literacy with young students, said Denise Kelly, president of the Rotary Club of Greater Rochester.
When the dictionaries were handed out to Nikki Anderson`s third-grade class at Riverside Central, Kelly asked the students to look up dewlap. The word refers to the loose skin hanging from the neck or throat of an animal.
Jada, 9, thinks she will use the dictionary often.
`A lot of the time I have to ask my mom or my dad on how to spell a word and sometimes they tell me something that I don`t understand,` she said.
Anderson said the third-grader often has a dictionary on her desk during independent reading.
`I don`t think I ever see her without a dictionary,` Anderson said.
Jada`s classmates also said they expect to use the new books.
Darcy, 8, said she plans to use the dictionary when she comes across a troublesome word because `it will help in the bigger grades.`
Other than words, the books contain flags of countries around the world and a list of the U.S. presidents.
Riverside Central Principal Christine Smith said the dictionaries are a great resource for the students.
