Thank you, Dictionary Man

For the last ten years, Fremont School has had a generous donor, the Dictionary Man. This anonymous donor has given dictionaries to all the third grade students at Fremont School each year. I asked him how this all started, and this was his direct response:
`Some ten years ago, I read in The Wall Street Journal `Letters to the Editor` where readers had written that they were impressed by a lady living in South Carolina, Mrs. Mary French, who started giving FREE dictionaries to third graders. She found that at that age children absorbed words more readily. Well, after those good results, readers joined with her to send FREE dictionaries to third graders in their state or community.

I decided to join in, and with Mr. Billington`s approval and with the help of Mrs. Mary Doering, we started our project at Fremont School and at Malaga Elementary. I also started a project at the Terry school, and in the next year two other elementary schools. Anyhow, I feel good knowing there are third grade students who with their pencils are marking words after learning and using new words each day. I do not know how many words are learned daily, but with the help of their parents and teachers, I am sure they are better readers.`
