Kiwanis Club Continues Dictionary Tradition for VS Schools

The Vinton Kiwanis Club is continuing its participation in The Dictionary Project, presenting dictionaries full of definitions and other important information to the third-grade students in the Vinton-Shellsburg School District. On Friday, Kiwanis member Lexa Speidel delivered the books to 3rd-graders in Mrs. Patterson’s class. Lexa pointed out some information in the dictionaries, including telling students where to read the longest word in the English language, which takes nearly a full page at the back of the book. The students spent several minutes reading through the dictionaries, trying to pronounce that word, practicing the sign language signals and sharing other information with classmates. Dictionary Day is one of the unique days that third-grade students look forward to every year. Lexa invited the students to bring their families to the annual Pancake Breakfast in March and to share what they have learned from the dictionaries with Kiwanis members. __________________________________________________________________________ Article Source: www.vintoniowa.org (Original Article Posted January 17th, 2014) Picture Source: www.vintoniowa.org (‘Kiwanis Club continues dictionary tradition for VS schools’) and www.communitynewspapergroup.com (‘Vinton Kiwanis Club donates dictionaries to local third graders’)
