Wykoff Lions Donate the Gift of Words to St. John’s Youth

The students at St. John’s Lutheran School in Wykoff received a special surprise as members of the Wykoff Lions Club joined their Wednesday morning activities to present the school with new dictionaries. While introducing the club, Principal Karl Peterman reminded the young scholars of the impact learning and higher education can have on their lives and the dictionaries could be the tools to achieve their scholarly goals [sic]. For their part, the club is just excited to give back to their community and hope the students enjoy using the dictionaries to learn and challenge their young minds. The Lions donated the books as part of the nationwide non-profit organization, [The] Dictionary Project. The campaign is based in Charleston, S.C., near where the mission began in 1992. Originally, the goal was to put a dictionary into the hands of every third grader in South Carolina each year, but as word spread of the project the goal began to include all students in the United States and even places as far away as the Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, nine Canadian provinces, as well as more than 150 other countries around the world. According to the project’s mission statement the hope of all those participating in the project is to assist all students in becoming good writers, active readers, creative thinkers and resourceful learners. The paperback dictionaries include an extensive dictionary along with the United States Constitution, the Declaration of Independence, the Pledge of Allegiance, information on all 50 states and biographies of the presidents. There are also sections on the planets and continents with maps. A special section even shows the alphabet in sign language and in Braille. _____________________________________ Original Article Posted: February 4th, 2014 Full Article: http://www.hometown-pages.com/main.asp?SectionID=11&SubSectionID=94&ArticleID=52073
