Jennings Foundation Presents Dictionaries and Thesauruses

Representatives of the Jennings Memorial Foundation visited Carter Elementary School and Kuehn-Haven Middle School on Nov. 4 to present dictionaries to third graders and thesauruses to sixth graders. It’s a long standing tradition with the Jennings Foundation. After distributing the dictionaries to the third grade students, Jennings Foundation Treasurer James E. McCartney asked students to look up the word “scholarship[.”] He explained that the Jennings Memorial Foundation awards college scholarships to eight graduating students in each Montrose Community Schools senior graduating class. “This belongs to you. It is a tool to be used in the classroom and brought home,” McCartney told the students. There was a great deal of excitement in the classroom, as many students began exploring the books immediately. Carter Elementary School Principal Cassandra Jackson overheard one student commenting that his older brother had received a dictionary too. Now he has his own to use. McCartney later told the Citizen, “For what it costs us, it’s one of the best investments we make in a community.” John C. Wendling worked with McCartney to distribute the dictionaries and thesauruses.
