Kiwanis Club of Queen Creek delivers dictionaries to students

The Kiwanis Club of Queen Creek presented every third grader in the J.O. Combs Unified School District with a new dictionary this month through the Dictionary Project.

PROJECT’S GOAL

The goal of the Dictionary Project is to help students become good writers, active readers, creative thinkers and resourceful learners by providing them with their own dictionary. Since its implementation in 1995, more than 14 million children have received dictionaries.

WHY THIRD GRADE?

Educators see third grade as the dividing line between learning to read and reading to learn. It’s the age at which dictionary skills are usually taught.

KIWANIS CLUB’S GOAL

Through support of sponsors and Kiwanis volunteers, the club wants to provide a dictionary to every third-grader in the United States to help them improve their reading and writing abilities. Many sponsors are also taking the project beyond the United States to help improve literacy worldwide.
