Altrusa International of Lexington Brings Dictionaries and Smiles to Breckinridge Elementary Students
Since 2010, Altrusa International of Lexington, Kentucky has proudly partnered with The Dictionary Project, providing personal dictionaries to over 9,200 students. After two years of pandemic interruptions, Altrusa volunteers were excited to return to in-person events in 2022.
On September 2, 2022, Altrusa members visited Breckinridge Elementary School, bringing new dictionaries to 85 third-grade students, their teachers, and Principal Michael Price. The event included an interactive activity where students eagerly searched for new words, building their vocabulary and having fun along the way.
One memorable moment came when a student found the word “loquacious” and jokingly told Principal Price that it described him — bringing smiles and laughter to the room. Principal Price shared that The Dictionary Project event is one of his favorite traditions of the school year, always encouraging students to expand their vocabulary and challenge him with new words.
Altrusa continues its strong tradition of promoting literacy by planning to visit seven schools during the 2022 school year, empowering students through the gift of words.
