Friends of the South Windsor Public Library are part of the Dictionary Project

The Friends of the South Windsor Public Library have finished their project of giving a gift of a dictionary to every third-grade student in the five South Windsor elementary schools.

The Friends project is part of a nationwide Dictionary Project started in 1992 when Annie Plummer gave 50 dictionaries to school near her home in Savannah, GA. Since then the project has grown and is now a non-profit, nationwide effort which has distributed over 16 million copies to third graders all across the country.

In the six years we have been part of the project, Friends of the South Windsor Library have given 2,352 dictionaries to very appreciative students and teachers in the South Windsor school system. The dictionaries are paid for by the twice-weekly used book sales conducted in the lower level of the Library and manned by a crew of devoted Friends of the Library.
