Rotary Club of St. Kitts gives over 600 Dictionaries to 3rd Graders

BASSETERRE ST. Kitts, October 18th, 2013 — One of the very significant and important Projects for the Rotary Club of St. Kitts for the year 2013 – 2014 is the Dictionary Project. This project launched on October 14th 2013 at the University Centre. The Project was initiated by the Rotary Club of St. Kitts in partnership with the St. Kitts – Nevis Ministry of Education, and the Christophe Habour Foundation. The Club intends to distribute over 600 dictionaries to the 3rd Graders in the primary schools throughout the island of St. Kitts. Each child enrolled in the 3rd grade in public and private schools around the island will be handed a Dictionary. The Rotary Club of St. Kitts envisages this Dictionary Project will aid students in a very specific way as the 3rd grade is generally noted as a critical point in a child’s education; it is the point at which a child progresses from ‘learning to read’ to ‘reading to learn’. In this regard the club and its partners see giving the gift of a dictionary as a very important gesture, to give each third grader an opportunity to own his or her very own Dictionary. The Rotary International Four Way Test is imprinted on the inside cover of each dictionary. It reads: Of the things We Think Say or Do: 1. Is it the Truth? 2. Is it Fair to all concerned? 3. Will it Build Good Will and Better Friendships? 4. Will it be Beneficial to all Concerned? Each 3rd Grader will have the opportunity to have a dictionary with their own name written in it. This is yet another meaningful way in which the Rotary Club of St. Kitts impacts the lives of many by giving back to the communities.
