American Legion Auxiliary Post 164 Brings Dictionaries to Bedford Third Graders

Every year, the American Legion Auxiliary Post 164 proudly delivers dictionaries to third grade students at Bedford Community Schools in Bedford, Iowa. This simple yet impactful tradition has been going strong since 2009.

To date, Post 164 has gifted 624 dictionaries to Bedford students. These books are more than just word lists—they’re powerful learning tools that help children build vocabulary, improve reading comprehension, and develop research skills.

The Auxiliary’s continued partnership with The Dictionary Project reflects its deep commitment to youth education. By putting dictionaries into the hands of every third grader, they are encouraging curiosity and lifelong learning.

Thanks to Post 164, Bedford’s young learners are better equipped to succeed in school and beyond.
