A dictionary teaches a child how to approach a problem and use critical thinking skills by sounding out the word and finding it in the dictionary. This simple task gives them a feeling of self-confidence and satisfaction that they cannot get online.

Rotary Club of Oak Ridge Promotes Literacy with 360 Dictionary Donations

The Rotary Club of Oak Ridge, joined by local Rotaract and Interact members, recently delivered 360 dictionaries to third grade students at Willowbrook, Glenwood, Linden, and Woodland Elementary Schools in Oak Ridge, Tennessee.

In addition to distributing the books, Rotarians engaged students in interactive activities—teaching them how to look up words like “kindness,” “service,” and “care.” Students then competed with their teachers in fun dictionary races, making literacy both educational and exciting. Each student received a personal dictionary to take home and keep.

The project is part of Rotary’s broader commitment to promoting basic education and literacy through The Dictionary Project, helping young learners develop vocabulary skills, independence, and a love for language.
