Skating for literacy

In recognition of the upcoming Martin Luther King Jr. holiday on Jan. 18, CalSkate of Milpitas is offering customers a way to skate, have fun and perform a community service.

For every full price admission the business sells that day for the special 1-4 p.m. skate, staff will donate $1 toward the California Dictionary Project, a non-profit organization dedicated to providing a dictionary for every local third-grade student.

`As a lifelong avid reader, I fully understand the benefits of kids having a dictionary of their very own to reference as they do their schoolwork,` said General Manager Didi Ford. `With approximately 725 third-graders in Milpitas, we feel that we will be able to achieve this goal.`

If CalSkate does well enough, they may be able to even help fund more than just the Milpitas Unified School District.

Admission will be $6.50 with a $3 skate rental for quads or $4 for inlines. All glow stick sales that day will also be contributed to the cause. In addition, the business will offer customers a choice of two free VIP skating passes ($32 value) or six free skating lessons ($30 value) in return for a $5 donation. They will accept the $5 donations throughout the month of January.

CalSkate is located at 980 Los Coches St. For more information, call 946-1363.
