Albania Prepares 100,000-Word Dictionary to Preserve and Promote National Language
A Milestone for Albanian Language and Culture
At the opening of the 16th edition of Albanology Week, Acting Prime Minister Albin Kurti announced the development of a new Albanian dictionary containing nearly 100,000 words. This major linguistic project is more than double the size of the 1981 edition, which had 41,000 entries.
Kurti emphasized the dictionary’s cultural importance. “Lexicography reflects identity,” he said, noting that modern scientific efforts in language, literature, and folklore deepen the understanding of Albanian heritage.
Building on Centuries of Research
The Prime Minister honored both foreign and Albanian scholars who have contributed to the field of Albanology. From Georg von Hahn, considered the father of Albanology, to Erik Hampi and notable local experts like Eqrem Çabej and Shaban Demiraj, these figures have helped define the linguistic and cultural identity of the Albanian people.
Kurti noted that their collective research has positioned the Albanian language firmly within the Indo-European family, reinforcing Albania’s place in the broader European cultural landscape.
Digital Future of Lexicography
One of the main themes of this year’s conference is “contemporary lexicography.” Kurti stressed the importance of adapting dictionary work to today’s digital world. He called for greater use of technology to handle linguistic data and meet international standards in modern language preservation.
He expressed confidence in the professionalism of Albanian researchers, stating, “Proper technological knowledge will help Albanian keep up with global linguistic goals.”
Albanology Week 2025
The conference will run through May 30, hosting five key sessions in linguistics, literature, history, folklore, and ethnology. These sessions will focus on advancing research, protecting Albania’s cultural heritage, and fostering deeper academic dialogue.
Kurti concluded by pledging full institutional support and affirming that this new dictionary project marks a significant step forward in Albanian language studies.
