Volunteers For Literacy of Habersham County Delivers Dictionaries and Graduation Dreams

Volunteers For Literacy of Habersham County (VFL) brought excitement, smiles, and educational inspiration to over 600 third-grade students in the Habersham County School System this September through their annual partnership with The Dictionary Project.

Each student received a personal dictionary and a pen inscribed with their high school graduation year — 2034. Dressed in caps and gowns, VFL volunteers visited all eight elementary schools in the county to reinforce the importance of finishing school and choosing a career they love.

Phylecia Wilson of VFL shared,

“What child doesn’t love a gift! And it doesn’t have to be a toy to receive smiling, happy faces… ‘Thank you! Can I take it home?’ was often heard as excited children carefully wrote their names in the front of their books.”

Adding to the enthusiasm, students participated in a custom rap called “We’re the Class of ’34,” written by retired Level Grove Elementary media specialist Helen O’Brien, making the occasion memorable and motivational.

This initiative not only equips students with a valuable learning tool but also builds aspirations for academic success. For three years, the Volunteers For Literacy team has made literacy personal, fun, and future-focused for children across the county.
