Olean Rotary Club Promotes Literacy with Over 3,000 Dictionaries for Local Students

More than 300 third-grade students in six schools across Olean, New York received a special gift this spring—a personal dictionary—thanks to the Rotary Club of Olean and its partnership with The Dictionary Project. Since launching their program in 2015, the Olean Rotary Club has distributed nearly 3,000 dictionaries, helping young students develop lifelong skills in reading, writing, and critical thinking. “This is a very positive program targeting literacy at the third grade level,” said Paula Bernstein, club president. “The children enjoy having their own book, and teachers and schools appreciate the support.” Each dictionary includes not just word definitions, but also maps, weights and measures, the U.S. Constitution, and lists of U.S. Presidents—turning a simple book into a powerful learning tool. Rotarian Doug Price, who leads the project with help from dedicated club members, emphasized the emotional impact of the initiative:
“It’s inspiring to see the excitement on the students’ faces and to witness the dedication of our teachers. We’re proud to contribute to such a meaningful cause.”
The project reached Washington West, East View, Portville, Southern Tier Catholic, Allegany-Limestone, and Hinsdale elementary schools in February and March. Donations from community members and the Cattaraugus Community Foundation help sustain this effort year after year. By participating in The Dictionary Project, the Olean Rotary Club demonstrates how a small book can make a big difference in a child’s future—fostering literacy, curiosity, and confidence in the classroom and beyond.
