Volunteers for Literacy Inspires Habersham County Students with Dictionaries and Graduation Dreams
In Habersham County, Georgia, every third-grade student receives more than just a dictionary—they receive inspiration. Through a meaningful collaboration with The Dictionary Project, Volunteers for Literacy of Habersham County has gifted nearly 4,300 dictionaries to students since 2015.
Each presentation is memorable: a volunteer in a graduation cap and gown talks to students about setting career goals and the importance of staying in school. To make the message stick, students also receive a personalized pen inscribed with their high school graduation year, reinforcing the idea that success is within reach.
The project is supported by local organizations including United Way, Constellation Energy (which contributed $500), and proceeds from a fun rubber duck race fundraiser held every spring.
This initiative not only strengthens vocabulary and reading skills—it plants seeds of ambition, making literacy a gateway to lifelong success.
