Malta-McConnelsville Rotary Club gives dictionaries to third graders

The Malta-McConnelsville Rotary Club recently distributed student dictionaries to all third grade students in the county as part of The Dictionary Project. The Dictionary Project began in 1995 for the purpose of improving children’s reading ability and comprehension.

Dictionaries also serve as a tool for helping students become good writers, active readers and creative thinkers. To date, over 11 million dictionaries have been distributed to third grade students. This grade level is targeted because it is the level at which dictionary skills are usually taught, and third grade is also the year when students transition from learning to read to reading to learn.

These dictionaries, given annually to third graders to use and keep, are paid for through generous donors including Rotary. The Malta-McConnelsville Rotary is working to improve literacy and the quality of life in the community.
