Dictionary of American Regional English

After 50 years of careful research and editing, the fifth and final volume of the Dictionary of American Regional English is complete and will be published next month by Harvard University Press. This amazing dictionary project records regional dialect from all over the United States. While we celebrate each year Noah Webster’s contribution in giving Americans a common vocabulary and consistent spellings with his first American dictionary back in 1806, we are also charmed by the variety we still find in American English, reflecting the wide range of customs and cultures in our country.
