Cy-Fair Republican Women Donate 3,000 Dictionaries to Support Literacy
Since 2006, the Cy-Fair Republican Women in Texas have supported student literacy by presenting third graders at Walker Elementary School with personal dictionaries as part of The Dictionary Project. To date, the group has provided over 3,000 dictionaries to students, ensuring each child receives a resource to boost vocabulary and independent learning. This year’s initiative was made possible with support from Congressman Morgan Luttrell, who helped fund the project.
A favorite moment during the presentation came from Literacy Chair Joy Gregory, who introduced students—and a few surprised adults—to one of the longest words in the dictionary: “Hippopotomonstrosesquipedaliophobia!” A fittingly long word meaning the fear of long words, it sparked laughter and curiosity across the room.
This enduring project highlights the power of a simple gift in shaping a student’s learning journey and building excitement around literacy—one word at a time.
