Lincoln Rotary Clubs Provide 3,400 Dictionaries to Third Graders in Annual Literacy Push
Rotary Club members from Lincoln Rotary Club 14, Lincoln East Rotary Club, and Lincoln South Rotary Club gathered once again to label and deliver dictionaries to every third grade student in Lincoln, Nebraska. Since 2006, the clubs have gifted nearly 60,000 dictionaries, including 3,400 this year alone, as part of their commitment to literacy through The Dictionary Project.Azariah Lawal, chair of the project from Lincoln East, shared how a dictionary changed his life at age 10—“exploring different pictures and words” sparked a love of language. Christie Weston, chair for Lincoln Rotary Club 14, emphasized the team effort it takes: over 100 Rotarians work together to make the project a reality.
This project shows how community-driven literacy programs can build lifelong learning habits, one dictionary at a time.
